Book Design

In GRC 439 - Book Design Technology, we were tasked with transforming an existing novel into an entirely new physical book. We started by cleaning up the the raw text and reflowing it into InDesign, to prepare for hours of reformatting and getting nitty and gritty with paragraph styles. We had full creative freedom when it came to layout and margins, typography, and decisions even down to cover material. The book-binding process itself was a big learning curve, but it was so magical to watch it all come to life. Each signature was hand-sewn with a needle and thread, and then I glued and cased in my book blocks onto my handmade book boards; I even took it a step further to feature hand-sewn headbands. Every detail really mattered to me and I was aiming for close to perfection with this project. In the end, I was able to take Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale and turn it into a three-volume series, cased in a navy velvet cover with gold vinyl accents marking each book's volume.
